The African Safari Experience
This is the reason you come to the bush, to explore its wonders and learn about the amazing flora and fauna which call it home…
Your safari at Nyala Safari Lodge is all about giving you an authentic African experience, where you can learn about the wonders of the wilderness from professional, qualified safari guides and understand the incredible way that plants and animals have evolved to live in complete harmony as part of a marvelously intricate extended environment.
From the fabled Big Five – elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard – to the smallest insects and birds – the African bush is filled with incredible flora and fauna and is, quite simply, breathtakingly beautiful.
Game drives at Nyala Safari Lodge take place twice a day, early in the morning and late in the afternoon. They last approximately three hours. We use open safari 4×4 vehicles which immerse you completely into the surrounding eco-systems, allowing you maximum viewing opportunities as we traverse the network of roads and trails on the reserve. Your experienced safari guides will share their years of experience and knowledge with you, helping you to understand the ways of wild Africa and giving you fresh appreciation for the world around you.
Please let us know any areas of particular interest, so that our guides can help you to get the very best out of your safari experience. We have a range of field guides and reference books on hand, because game viewing doesn’t stop in between game drives, as there are always birds and animals to be spotted in and around the lodge.
Africa’s Big Five Safari Icons
You’ve seen the Big Five in books and you’ve seen them on TV. But now you have the chance to see them for yourself. The real thing. In person.
Nyala Safari Lodge is located in the heart of Big Five country on a reserve which is open to the Kruger National Park – this means there are no fences between us and the Kruger, so animals can move freely between them. This makes us part of the Greater Kruger National Park, and gives you an incredible opportunity to see these iconic animals on your game drives with us.
But where does the term “Big Five” come from? How did these five animals –lion, elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros and leopard – come to be called this?
Well, it was originally a hunting term used by the so-called “great white hunters” in the hunting heyday of the 19th and early 20thcenturies, when the safari industry came into being in East Africa. In those days professional hunters bagged as many trophies as possible in as short a time as possible. Considered a rite of passage for seasoned travellers, everybody from American presidents to European royalty and heads of state came to East Africa to shoot a large, dangerous animal. These five animals quickly became known as the most dangerous animals to hunt on foot, and the “Big Five” name stuck – although here at Nyala Safari Lodge, the only shooting done is through a camera lens.
Extra Activities and Excursions
