Welcome to Nyala Safari Lodge
Tucked away in the Balule Private Nature Reserve in the Greater Kruger, Nyala Safari Lodge is an intimate wilderness retreat where luxurious comfort meets the untamed wild.
The lodge features five air-conditioned, rondawel-style chalets, nestled beneath ancient Jackalberry and Boer-bean trees. Each chalet offers a private veranda with bush or river views, designed for slow, unhurried days in nature. Sleeping a maximum of 10 guests, Nyala offers an exclusive and deeply personal safari experience.
Interiors are styled in soft, earthy tones with natural textures, blending seamlessly into the surroundings. Gently curved forms echo the landscape, while indoor and outdoor showers allow for bathing under African skies. Four chalets include deep soaking bathtubs for ultimate relaxation. Each room also features a tea and coffee station for quiet mornings spent watching wildlife or listening to the dawn chorus.
At the heart of the lodge, the main area is a warm, welcoming space where tea, coffee, fresh muffins, and homemade banana bread is made available for guests to help themselves throughout the day. Complimentary local wines, beers, and soft drinks are situated on the veranda. Gourmet meals are served on the raised deck overlooking the riverbed, where wildlife often passes through.
A beautiful rim-flow pool set among lush gardens offers a peaceful midday retreat, whilst the main viewing deck designed to follow the curves of the river, provides multiple spaces to relax. Here one can enjoy watching elephants and other wildlife in the river below, whilst either reading a book, or holding a refreshing beverage.
Evenings are spent around the fire pit on the deck under star-filled skies, or in the enclosed boma ideal for guests to relax and swop stories of the day.
Professionally guided safaris depart twice-daily in state-of-the-art safari vehicles at first light and again in the late afternoon, when wildlife is most active. Each drive lasts approximately three hours and includes relaxed coffee stops in the morning and sundowners in the afternoon, best enjoyed with a perfectly poured G&T.

Nyala Safari Lodge is located in the Balule Private Nature Reserve within the Greater Kruger, a private Big 5 area that shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park. The lodge is conveniently situated approximately 20 minutes from Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, making access straightforward for both local and international travellers.
Many guests fly into Hoedspruit via Johannesburg or Cape Town. Afternoon safaris depart at either 3.30 pm or 4.00 pm, depending on the season and weather conditions.
From the Jejane Gate, the lodge is a further 40-minute drive. This is an important consideration for all guests, including those who choose to self-drive. Standard pickup at the gate is usually scheduled for 1.30 pm unless otherwise arranged. At the gate, guests will transfer into a safari vehicle for the journey to the lodge.
Self-driving guests will be provided with a pin drop and detailed travel advice ahead of arrival. It is essential that all guests supply a contact number at the time of booking to allow the lodge team to remain in touch and assist with travel coordination as needed.
Lodge & Rooms
Distinct in design and thoughtfully curated, Nyala blends luxurious comfort with the untamed wild.
Five air-conditioned, luxurious rondawel-style chalets are nestled in the shade of ancient Jackalberry and Boer-bean trees, each offering a private veranda with views over the bush or riverfront. Designed for slow days and unhurried afternoons, these spaces invite guests to unwind and settle into the rhythm of the wild. Sleeping a maximum of 10 guests, Nyala is an intimate and exclusive safari experience.
Styled in light, earthy tones with natural fabrics and organic textures, the rooms blend effortlessly into their wild surroundings. Their gently spiralling shapes echo the curves of nature, while both indoor and outdoor showers allow for sunlit or moonlit bathing beneath vast African skies. Four of the five chalets also feature deep soaking bathtubs, perfect for complete relaxation after a day on safari.
Each room includes a tea and coffee station, ideal for enjoying a morning brew from bed or an afternoon cup in privacy. Watch resident bushbuck quietly graze nearby or awaken to the dawn chorus of birdsong with your hot drink of choice.
The social spaces of the lodge are equally inviting. A central open deck area looks out over a nearby waterhole, making it a perfect spot for starlight dinners and storytelling around the large fire pit. A Cosy lounge, open-plan kitchen, an elegant undercover dinner area complete the communal spaces, all encouraging a sense of home in the wild, with total relaxation.
Wildlife
The bush is wild, unpredictable, exciting and often surprising. It changes daily, with no two days ever being the same. Wildlife regularly spotted at the waterhole or along the banks of the seasonal river in front of the lodge, includes an array of birdlife, elephants, giraffe, kudu, leopard, hippo plus many others. Because The Balule Nature Reserve is situated in the Greater Kruger area it is home to the well-known Big 5 reserve. So game drives in this beautiful part of the world are usually what dreams are made of.
